And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him,
who have been called according to his purpose.
- Romans 8:28

The Sunday before Thanksgiving (November 20) is when this familiar verse is scheduled to be part of our current Romans study. However, it also applies to the “living illustration” scheduled for tonight.

Last week we began a four-week series of “living illustrations” as part of our regular Sunday evening services. God used Wayne Stephens and his story to open our eyes wider to opportunities all of us have not only to serve but also to be blessed. Wayne and Karen have received, and continue to receive, priceless blessings as a result of their participation on Wednesday nights in the ministry at the Woodbine Family congregation. It was obvious to all of us that Wayne’s passion is far deeper and his joy is far greater than any words could ever express. This Brentwood Hills couple is part of a huge “army” of active volunteers at Brentwood Hills who quietly but effectively serve regularly in the name of Jesus!

Our “living illustrations” continue tonight with an entirely different story – from someone who will be visiting with us from another Nashville area congregation. We’ll allow our special guest to share the details and specifics, but in preparation for what they will say I want to call your attention to two simple observations regarding Romans 8:28:

Paul does NOT say that all things are good!

Really bad things can and do happen to really good people. God’s people in the Bible … and today … are not immune from pain, heartache, failure, loss or even tragedy. We don’t have to like it and we may not understand it, but we can’t deny it.

Paul DOES say that God works in all things – and “all” includes the bad things!

Satan would love to use the bad things that happen to destroy us, but God wants to use them to develop us. He can and He will! And as Paul writes, this is not speculation or wishful thinking, but something we can “know.”

Come tonight at 6:00 p.m. expecting a blessing!
