A Perfect World?

Everyone knows we don’t live in a perfect world, but God wants perfection to be our goal. What can we do to strive for perfection?

There was a time when the world was perfect. The first sin ever committed was recorded in Genesis 3, which means that the world we read about in Genesis 2 was perfect.

What would be the characteristics of a perfect world? Here are three as described in Genesis 2:

In a perfect world, people need “Responsibilities”

The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. Genesis 2:15

Contrary to what some may think, work is not punishment for sin but something that is actually necessary for us to enjoy a rich and full life. God has given each of us incredible talents, interests and skills. Some develop those gifts from God while others waste them, but the opportunities are there for all of us.

In a perfect world, people need “Rules”

And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” Genesis 2:16-17

“Anything goes” is not the way it is in a perfect world. God gave Adam clear instructions. However, contrary to what Satan wants us to think, God’s instructions were far more positive than negative. Adam could enjoy EVERY fruit tree in the Garden with ONLY ONE exception – yet that "forbidden fruit" is precisely where Satan focused Eve’s attention (see Genesis 3).

In a perfect world, people need “Relationships”

The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone …..” Genesis 2:18

God did not create us to live in isolation but in relationships. We are born into families, and when we become Christians we are “born again” into the family of God. In the Garden of Eden, before the first sin scarred the human race, God established marriage and family – “… for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife …” (Genesis 2:24).

Finally brothers...Aim for perfection... II Corinthians 13:11
