Jonathan is exactly right!
Last Sunday, Jonathan closed both morning services by publicly disagreeing with something that had been said during the sermon.
I had discussed our need for volunteers to work in the children’s Sunday School program – both this summer and during the next school year. During the sermon I had mentioned a church in Atlanta that requires more than 1,300 volunteers on any given Sunday to serve those who come for worship and Bible Study. My comments were something like,
“We don’t need 1,300 … but only several hundred volunteers to meet the needs of our children’s Sunday School program.”
Jonathan very wisely and appropriately “corrected” me by saying,
“We do need 1,300 volunteers … maybe not all in the children’s program, but we need that many people to be involved at Brentwood Hills.”
Jonathan is exactly right! Actually, we are currently blessed with 1,253 teens and adults who call Brentwood Hills their church home - in addition to many wonderful folks who "regularly visit." However, to use the analogy that was mentioned last week, some of those 1,253+ are “on the field,” others are “on the bench,” and still others are “in the stands.”
How exciting it would be if (and will be when) 100% of the 1,253+ at Brentwood Hills are strategically involved as volunteers in some aspect of ministry – or at least willing to be? Are there enough needs in our congregation and community – not to mention the world – to require that many people to be involved? Of course there are!
This certainly doesn’t mean that every aspect of ministry takes place in the Brentwood Hills building – or even as part of the Brentwood Hills church. However, imagine how many lives can be touched by God if and when all of us at Brentwood Hills are fully engaged in ministry – wherever that ministry happens to be – using the gifts and opportunities God has entrusted to each of us.
“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
“Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”—Ephesians 4:11-16
